Top 5 Risk Factors for Type 2 Diabetes

Friday, December 21st, 2012

While most folks have heard of Diabetes before, not everyone knows what this all-too-common condition is really about.  More importantly, not enough folks know whether or not they’re at risk!  A serious and chronic metabolic disorder, Type 2 Diabetes is characterized by the body’s inability to use insulin properly.  (It varies from Type 1 Diabetes, where the pancreas stops producing insulin, altogether.)

Also known as “late onset” Diabetes, Type 2 Diabetes can also contribute to serious complications down the line, including heart disease, kidney damage, nerve damage and more.  This is why patients need to understand potential risk factors and schedule regular physical exams.  Do you know what to watch out for?

Here is our list of the Top 5 Risk Factors for Type 2 Diabetes:

  1. Weight. Being overweight is often the biggest contributing factor in developing Type 2 Diabetes.  This is because excess fat – particularly around the midsection – can lead to insulin resistance.
  2. Activity Level. Regular exercise is one of the most important factors in preventing and managing Type 2 Diabetes. This is because physical activity contributes to a healthier weight and burns glucose as fuel.
  3. Age. Where Type 1 Diabetes usually presents itself early in life, the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes increases as we get older.  This becomes especially true for those in their 40s and up.
  4. Race. Certain races and ethnic groups seem to be more susceptible to developing Type 2 Diabetes.  These include African Americans and Latino Americans, among others.
  5. Family History. If a close relative was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, your chances of developing the condition are significantly higher.  Be sure to understand your family history and find out if you’re in this high-risk category.
